Ponferrada City Council

It is an honor for me, as Mayor of Ponferrada, and a privilege, as a film buff, to make a cameo appearance in this publication of the 23rd Ponferrada International Film Festival. An event that, since its origins in 2001 as a Short Film Competition, has grown with the same enthusiasm and experience, becoming an essential part of our city’s cultural calendar. The Festival reaffirms itself as a space for culture, creativity, and dialogue. It continues to champion talent through the Official Competition Sections: “Perspectives on National Short Films” and “Perspectives on International Short Films,” and is open to discovering projects from filmmakers of the future.

This edition is especially significant due to the consolidated relationship with the British Council, which allows us to offer a “Perspective on British Cinema” through a selection of the best British short films. We value the cinematic quality that BAFTA Shorts brings and its contribution to the diversity of our festival.

Furthermore, the Festival maintains its commitment to local proposals. For me, this is fundamental. On the one hand, the “Our Current Cinema” section provides a platform for visibility. We are a land of culture, experiences, and sensitivity, and therefore, of cinema. On the other hand, the “Our Cinema of All Time” section pays a moving tribute to our audiovisual heritage with “Like Last Late Drops,” a pioneering educational project by Carlos de Cabo, restored and enhanced by the “Valentín García Yebra” Municipal Library.

I would like to highlight the fundamental work of the “Mi Retina me Engaña” Cultural Association for its excellent organization. I also highlight the participation of the members of the Selection Committees and all the short films received. It is a festival for everyone, and by everyone, in which Ponferrada merges with the world. The Festival is not only an opportunity to discover emerging talent, but also a symbol of the open and diverse society that is Ponferrada, a space for coexistence with other people’s lives on screen.

My sincere thanks to the filmmakers, the promoters and collaborators, and, of course, to the audience, whose passion fills the theaters.

It was said in All in One Day that: “Life moves so fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you might miss it.” This Festival helps you not miss the good things in life. May everyone enjoy it.

Mr. Marco Antonio Morala
MAYOR OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF PONFERRADA
